Product development

Tourism uses the word product to mean visitor experiences that can be sold to customers. We aim to create locally supplied product that reflects the real needs of target markets interested in the region. Our product development is designed to:

  • Value add to existing local strengths
  • Improve competitiveness, market share and \ yield
  • Be market ready

We combine user friendly tools with a range of intuitive techniques to create the most innovative product development possible

We can reinvigorate or develop new tourism product. There is no limit to what our creativity can introduce, but some of the regular areas we deliver on include:

Ecolodges and adaptive reuse

We have played many roles creating innovative accommodation across the world.

Director Simon McArthur coordinated the conservation and adaptation of this large historic site into Q Station – a 70 room hotel with restaurants, conference and function facilities.

Sometimes we help create the ideas to start or reinvigorate existing accommodation to become more attractive to customers, such as new furnishings or menu. Sometimes we help create and build the entire property – for example we have just finished adapting a historic site into a 90 room heritage property using heritage buildings that used to look after immigrants quarantined in Sydney (www.qstation.com.au). We have also helped create tented camps as permanent or seasonal operations.

Accommodation should blend authenticity and some comfort

Children’s programs for resorts

If the children are happy the parents are happy. We can create programs for children to get closer to their environment, be artistic and socialise with other children. Some of our Ecoclubs have become branded and created merchandise sales for other local businesses.

Our children’s programs have increased customer satisfaction, length of stay and therefore profit of some ecolodges.

Interactive tours and theatre

We have created and reinvigorated adventure, cultural and ecotours across South and Central America. We believe that most special interest tours are predictable and can bore customers.

So some of the qualities that we make sure our tours have to avoid this are:

  • Making them interactive, by training guides to ask questions, provide customers with choices and getting customers to use their senses
  • Changing content from information to stories
  • Introducing new content that is relevant to contemporary issues and solutions
  • Structuring the experience to have a proper introduction and conclusion

We helped a Venezuelan ecotour operator create an ecotour based on the escape of Jimmy Angel from the top of Angel Falls

We also like to draw on famous stories to create experiences that have instant market appeal, such as guided walks through sites from the book and films Lord of the Rings. This also provides local communities with greater capacity to attract free public relations and word of mouth marketing.

We have many ideas to create new product from spiritual and supernatural spheres, such locations where meridian lines intersect

Themed self guided routes

A strategic way to spread tourism activity and its benefits are routes that link complimentary experiences around an interesting theme and story. We have created trails with themes such as food, wine, dinosaurs, archaeology, mining, animals and plants.

Our routes have doubled local operator income.

Joining other sustainable businesses

We enjoy creating and joining new sustainable local businesses alongside tourism business, such as small scale production of specialty foods and beverages for tourist retail sales and other regions. The key is to keep things simple and make the business part of the tourism product.

We have helped establish cooking schools as an extension of tourism that help communities earn income and preserve culture

Spa treatments that use local ingredients can be attractive to the market and cheaper to establish than formal spa operations
